I was already sold on the importance of fairy-tales for shaping the cultural imagination, but this book just floored me. It’s the third in the series, and it may be the best yet. @PageauJonathan and Heather Pollington have accomplished something really special. This story is so deep. It helps the reader see parenting, romance, appetite, temptation, immaturity, aging, responsibility, and many other themes in their proper light. I’m struck at how much is accomplished in less than 50 pages—half of which is breathtaking art. We need good stories—ones that can make our eyes grow wide with wonder and our hearts crack with contrition. The Tale of Rapunzel and the Evil Witch is exactly that.

@BMcGrewvy Fundamentally? I think you’re overstating it. Grace giving his life to save Rocky is Christian. Freely given, out of love.

The basic conceit of Project Hail Mary is fundamentally pagan, not Christian: Have a few volunteers agree to commit a noble suicide (or be human-sacrificed if they annoyingly don't feel like noble-suiciding themselves) on the slim chance that this will avert cosmic judgment.

What if we got this excited about having beautiful buildings and a good train system? Wellsianity is lame. Mission ppropriately named after a demon.

Liftoff. The Artemis II mission launched from @NASAKennedy at 6:35pm ET (2235 UTC), propelling four astronauts on a journey around the Moon. Artemis II will pave the way for future Moon landings, as well as the next giant leap — astronauts on Mars.

@Andrewnsnyder I’ve been wondering why the kids have disparate effects from their aging. Aslan is bigger for Suzie because she’s older. But Peter and Susan, in the same book, are told they are becoming too old for Narnia. How are these reconciled?

“Aslan,” said Lucy, “you're bigger.” "That is because you are older, little one," answered he. "Not because you are?" "I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger.” - C.S. Lewis, Prince Caspian

@PageauJonathan The concern over mechanism is also driven by meaning. But it's the same narrow concern every time: Is the supernatural worldview tenable post Sci. Rev. and Enlightenment? If the events described can be substantiated, this means our beliefs can be credible.

"Historical Accuracy" Can Miss the Point We often assume that being “historically accurate” means getting closer to the truth, but that’s not always the case. In this video, I explore how modern, mechanical thinking can actually invert meaning. youtu.be/HXsbK_k8vn4

Just because an author is unaware of the symbols motivating him doesn’t mean they aren’t there. “I soon realized that poets … compose their poems … like seers and prophets who also say many fine things without any understanding of what they say.” (Plato)
Steve Skojec@SteveSkojec

“There isn’t even any symbolism.” I’ve been telling people this all day. You can try to retcon Project Hail Mary into your allegory of choice, but that’s projection. It’s OK for it to just be a good story.

So to what degree is "religion" adaptive? Apparently the "non-religious" don't reproduced and therefore volunteer themselves out of the future, which is the eschaton for the secularists.
Paul Anleitner@PaulAnleitner

If you ask a room of ten “non-religious” people under the age of 40, “How many of you want to have children?” Only THREE of them would raise their hand. If your view of life makes shut off creating life, when do start to question if you’ve fallen for a lie that is anti-life?

I am convinced this is a passage about AI. "Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.” - Luke 8:18

The Biblical texts on idolatry are relevant to the conversations surrounding AI. The elevation of that which is below us to a station above us inverts our own nature. We become like the thing we worship.

I think this is my new go-to for introducing people to Jonathan's Symbolic thought. Also, I got a real kick out of the fact that I use the exact same Neil deGrasse Tyson tweet in my class when I teach the importance of Aristotle's Four Causes. youtu.be/37yo09zf1s0?si…

@PageauJonathan This was so good. Never noticed the connection between “fluidity” and multiplicity. Also, when I teach my kids about the four causes, I use the exact same Neil Tyson tweet. That was hilarious.
