@HiddenYorkshire I get so annoyed about what schools fail to teach us. I went to a grammar school where i got 11 O levels - ridiculous overkill - but ZERO advice on how to navigate tax, insurance, national insurance, renting/buying flats, benefits, all the things we would all need. Nuts.

When I became self-employed in 2021 I had no idea what I was doing because there was nobody there to tell me. I had no idea how to send an invoice, no idea of the going rate for public speaking, no idea even how to network. No idea of how to pitch something to an editor. None of it was taught and it's just expected that you already know what you're doing. But I knew nothing. My parents never helped me out - too old and too retired - and nothing came from school or uni either. So in hindsight, I felt like I was thrown into a deep end and had to paddle for survival, and it's only in the past few years I've really got a hang of it. But it's terrifying, and I've had a lot of times spiralling going "I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO"

@HiddenYorkshire In early 90s, that still kind of applied. I got started writing sketches for radio shows, and drawing a strip in a local paper; absolute pin money, but enough to rent a bedsit in Clapham. Different world now

It's really sad reading the biography of basically any successful rags-to-riches artist who was born in the 1940s/50s because you can't just "hop on a train to London with two bob in your pocket and a dream". The world of the beat-poets in which one could drift through towns and somehow build a career just isn't possible anymore. There is no slumming it in some London flat where you spend all day practicing music before being spotted in a pub by a record exec. It's just a fantasy

@CatOfLongTails @PEWilliams_ Something very like this happens in the novel Rainbow's End by Vernor Vinge... published 2006 I think... ouch
English

@PEWilliams_ Yes and this has been reported on in the press.

@a1e9 @hayleycampbell Ive changed my views on Abbot and Costello since that post in 2018
English

@AndyRileyish @hayleycampbell Oh yeah, but that was the funniest monster comedy of the era :)
English

@hayleycampbell Yep we all saw that together. Eddie got the 8 movie blu-ray frankenstein box set so we’ve started on that... if i remember right the first 3 are belters then it’s a long steady slide down to Abbott and fucking Costello

@LukeBarnett @nofilmschool I looked at the ad showing a script being ‘improved’ by the AI. Every single line gets longer, flabbier, adjective-heavy and just plain worse. All stuff you’d trim out on a tightening pass. If that’s what they’re putting in the shop window, it’s a no from me
English

@nofilmschool Hilarious that even the tweet is written by Chat.

The “AI in Hollywood” debate is exhausting. Scriptlaunch takes a smarter angle: don’t replace the writer—support them. #sponsored nofilmschool.com/scriptlaunch-r…

@HiddenYorkshire The Office (orig UK) version is like this too i think. Rewatched it last year. In 2001, Tim, Dawn and David Brent were tragic figures in normal but dull stable jobs, not following dreams. Now i look at it and feel like saying, you’re all doing great!
English

thinking about the "suburban horror" trope and how badly it's aged...oooh, it's a nice, high-trust, low-crime suburban community where kids can play on the street and everyone knows each other and a single salary can buy a nice house and garden and a car? sounds pretty good to me. oh wait...you're going to tell me that nothing is quite as it seems? that there's a dark secret lurking beneath the polished, friendly exterior? groundbreaking....

Yesterday I was lucky enough to be at the Wigmore Hall to see @ErrollynWallen play and Ruby Hughes sing, and it was GREAT. And it was going out live on Radio 3 so you can hear it here. A grand hour. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

This is nuts. In London alone she already has a big park and a shiny new tube line named for her. A chunk of Antarctica the size of Britain is called Queen Elizabeth Land. How many memorials does one person need?

As today's her birthday, today I remember Debbie Barham, a comedy writer of my generation who died very young. As far as I know, she was the youngest broadcast comedy writer there ever was or will be. 17 when she turned pro!
