Has any UK train company got a contract yet with @Starlink ? And yes, this tweet is coming from a train in East Anglia’s comms void and it has taken 15 minutes to write and post…

@edwardstrngr65 @Starlink It’ll happen, I’m sure. There’s no particularly difficult technical challenge which hasn’t been solved. As with defence, the challenge here is securing funding from govt for it.

@MikeGib_images @edwardstrngr65 @Starlink It’s GSM-R which is the backbone today. As the name suggests, it’s based on GSM tech so is of no use for passenger data at all. Due to be replaced by the 5G FRMCS which potentially could be. When that happens is an entirely different question.

@AndyRoden1 @AssistantWoof My mum has my nieces dog at the moment & we'd planned to head off to a lake in Cannock Chase yesterday with the dog. But in the morning I told my mum to remove her shoes & walk on the patio area of her back garden - she decided we shouldn't be taking the dog out after that 😁

Today is one of those days I’m particularly grateful to live in an old house with 3ft thick stone walls. The contrast between indoors and out is astonishing. @AssistantWoof confined to the house as she’ll sunbathe until she gets poorly hot otherwise.

@edwardstrngr65 @Starlink …use some of its theoretically huge capacity for onboard internet, although that system is a way down the line yet. Right now, satellite internet is proven to work; it’s the costs of installation and operation that could block it. Nothing technical.

@edwardstrngr65 @Starlink …free for all passengers (most of the time it’s reliability we’re looking for more than speed), with faster speeds available as add-ons in standard class and included in First Class. Beyond that, the Future Rail Mobile Communications System could potentially…

Probably a hot take: I think people shit on the GWR too much 🤷‍♂️. You can make the argument that, yes, most of the designs look the same, but in terms of standardization of parts, and even with certain practices, they were way ahead of their time.

@burngold @danielmgmoylan @Modern_Railways Not necessarily, Dave. I've covered disputes which were resolved quickly and fairly because both sides dealt with each other in good faith. In such situations, govt would be well advised to let GBR deal with it as it sees best rather than sticking its oar in.

@danielmgmoylan @Modern_Railways ...difficult. No govt is going to offer a much higher pay rise for rail staff than nurses or police officers. If you get the chance, have a chat with former senior BR managers about how they worked with the unions and resolved disputes. It is fascinating to hear their stories.

@danielmgmoylan @Modern_Railways ...well out of privatisation as it was cheaper for private operators to settle than to prolong a dispute. Loss of revenue hurt them badly on relatively short franchises. Now most rail staff are in the public sector, negotiating big % pay rises with govt will be much more...
