Selecting the perfect watermelon is all in the thump’s tone.
You start with looking for a round melon, not a long one. The round ones are female. The long ones are male. The female ones are sweeter, not ironically. Then, although this characteristic isn’t very pretty, you look for a big yellow spot on the outside of the melon. This is the spot the melon was in touch with the ground. Regarding this spot, the bigger the better. More electronic exchange occurs where this melon touches dirt.
Finally, you thump the melon with your knuckle or a slap of your hand, listening for tone. You want a nice baritone thump. Not a thud. A dead sounding thud indicates an overripe watermelon, pulling away from itself in the center, and already on its last days. A high pitch thump indicates an underripe melon which will not be sweet, nor ripe out to the edges.
But a nice baritone thump compared to the rest at the store will yield something like what I just cut open: the sweetest, juiciest, crispiest ripest watermelon of the summer.
