I’m gonna say it. Bedtime Stories is Madonna’s best album. People were so butthurt over her Sex book and the Erotica era that they tried to punish her for it, which is the only reason this album peaked at number 3 in America. But musically? She won. She gave us immaculate vocals, smooth late-night R&B, and absolute sophistication from start to finish. And nobody ever talks about "Sanctuary", which is a crime because it is a masterpiece. The track feels so incredibly forbidden. The melody creates this heavy, atmospheric vibe where you feel like you aren't even supposed to be listening to it - it is so deeply sexual, intimate, and explicit without needing to shout about it. From the hypnotic energy of "Sanctuary" to the effortless middle finger of "Human Nature", it is her most cohesive, textured, and underrated body of work. A 90s masterpiece.
