WHERE THOMAS TUCHEL WENT WRONG
Thomas Tuchel deserves credit for taking England to the World Cup semi-finals. Before the tournament, many questioned whether this squad could even make a deep run. But football is ultimately judged by the biggest moments, and against Argentina, Tuchel got those moments wrong.
The turning point came immediately after England took the lead. Instead of continuing to attack, England retreated. Tuchel switched to a more defensive setup and invited Argentina onto them. Against an ordinary team, that approach might have worked. Against Lionel Messi, it was asking for punishment.
The substitution of Declan Rice completely changed the game. Rice had been controlling the midfield, breaking up attacks and giving England an outlet whenever they were under pressure. Once he left the pitch, England lost their composure. Argentina dominated possession, camped in England's half and never looked back.
Tuchel also deserves criticism for his squad selection. Leaving behind creative players like Cole Palmer and Phil Foden always looked like a gamble. When England desperately needed someone to keep the ball or produce a moment of quality, there wasn't enough creativity available.
The use of Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke was equally frustrating. England needed pace to push Argentina backwards and relieve the pressure, yet they never fully committed to that plan. Instead, they accepted wave after wave of Argentine attacks.
Football is decided by fine margins, but this defeat wasn't simply about Argentina being brilliant.
England abandoned the aggressive, front-foot football that brought them this far. Tuchel was hired to make England fearless in the biggest moments.
Against Argentina, he blinked first.
And against Messi, that's all it takes.

There are teams that dominate from the first whistle. Then there's Argentina.
They don't always overwhelm you early. In fact, sometimes they do the opposite. They make you believe you've figured them out. They let you score. They let your fans dream. They let the commentators start talking about an upset.
Then everything changes.
One pass. One run. One moment of magic.
Against Cape Verde, they found a way.
Against Egypt, they stayed alive until the decisive moment.
Against Switzerland, they survived before striking.
Against England, they absorbed the pressure, waited patiently and let Messi take over with two assists that completely changed the story.
That's what makes them so dangerous. They don't panic. They don't chase games emotionally. They trust their quality and know that eventually the opportunity will come.
It's honestly exhausting playing against a team that refuses to die.
As an England supporter for the night, the hope was the painful part. For long periods it felt possible.
Then Argentina reminded everyone why champions are champions.
Football can be cruel.
Argentina somehow make it crueler.

I can't even troll today. Messi reminded everyone why he's one of the greatest ever. England were punished for sitting too deep. 😅🐐

What a performance from Messi. 2 assists. Argentina win 2-1. England really thought parking the bus against the GOAT was a good idea. 😭 You don't survive 90 minutes inviting Lionel Messi to solve problems. #England #Argentina #Messi

IF ENGLAND WIN THE WORLD CUP, RICE DESERVES THE BALLON D'OR. And this is why:
🏆 Arsenal's best player in a Premier League-winning season.
🏆 Dominated the Champions League with world-class performances in the biggest games.
🏆 Won Arsenal Player of the Season for the second year running.
📊 Finished the club season with 53 appearances, 5 goals and 10 assists from a deeper midfield role while controlling games on and off the ball.
🌍 Then he carried that level into England's World Cup campaign, playing through illness and injury, yet remaining the heartbeat of Tuchel's midfield as England reached the final stages.
The Ballon d'Or isn't just about goals. It's about who defines the biggest matches, who makes everyone around them better, and who delivers trophies.
If England lift the World Cup, Declan Rice would have been the driving force behind both Arsenal's league title and England's greatest achievement in 60 years.
Give him the Ballon d'Or. 🌾🏆
