In 2013, Welsh IT engineer James Howells from Newport accidentally threw away a hard drive that held the private keys to about 7,500–8,000 $BTC. The drive ended up in the Docksway landfill in Newport, buried under thousands of tons of waste. As Bitcoin’s price exploded, the stash was worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Howells offered the city council huge cuts (tens of millions) if they let him dig, and even proposed a high-tech search using AI, drones, and robot dogs, funded by investors. Newport City Council repeatedly refused, citing environmental risk, cost, and the fact that, legally, anything in the landfill belongs to them. He sued the council for hundreds of millions in damages, but in January 2025 a High Court judge shut the case down as having “no realistic prospect of success.' After more than a decade of trying, reports in 2025 say he has effectively given up on ever getting the hard drive back. R.I.P
