@ehanford Have you ever thought of going back to Bethlehem PA to see why students haven’t made more gains on standardized tests? Private companies say they have evidence that k-3 students are making gains in reading but, state test scores don’t match the hype. I’d love to understand why.

The Outlier Sold a Story Episode 11: There’s a school district in eastern Ohio where virtually all the students become good readers by the time they finish third grade. How did they do it?

@maiamcdonld Wow, so sad, Maia💔 FWIW, Half of households in LA’s Altadena, which bore a brunt of the damage, make less than $100k/year (that’s multiple incomes in one house). And it’s a historically Black community where POC make up half of residents.

I don't know, as someone whose family home was severely damaged in a massive fire the summer before my senior year of college, I don't like the way some people are criticizing folks whose homes burned down in L.A., even if they are massively wealthy.

I don't live in the Midwest or the South. I'm in this forgotten hole, the Mid-South. It doesn't get much coverage because it's so far from each state's major population and political centers. It's culturally unique from the South and Midwest. How do we bring more journalism here?

In dozens of cases ProPublica reviewed, federal judges found that some doctors working for insurance companies engaged in “selective readings” of medical evidence and “shut their eyes” to medical opinions opposing their conclusions. propublica.org/article/mental…

Read this absolutely damning account of how insurers, including United, rely on the same doctors to deny mental health care, even as judges repeatedly question their calls: “puzzling”, disingenuous”, “dishonest”, “baseless”, and more propublica.org/article/mental…

A month ago, we got a tip from a reader who'd had a delightful run-in w/ a 94-year-old man working at Midway Airport. "He'd make a fascinating subject for a ... story." @mack_liederman tracked him down. Meet Robert Garrison, the holiday hero we need: blockclubchicago.org/2024/12/20/94-…

Some twenty million Americans are actively preparing for cataclysm—roughly twice as many as in 2017. Political violence, including the spectre of civil war, is one of the reasons. newyorker.com/magazine/2024/…
