The pursuit can be lonely. We’ve all heard the saying people show up at two times: at the beginning when you’re getting ready to start and at the end when you cross the finish line, but it’s the middle that can be a place of solitude. It doesn’t have to be lonely all the time with the right teammates, coaches, and support system, but I think we overlook the benefits of choosing to get it done even if it means doing it alone. Finding time to get the extra work in, finding the discipline when the motivation lacks, and living with integrity in your reps when no one is watching- those are the pieces that give us an extra edge. It’s also the pieces that most prepare us for life after sports. There is something powerful about being able to do it together as a team, but there is also something fulfilling about doing some of it alone. It forces you to have that internal dialogue of when to push and when to concede. It creates opportunities where you are forced to make decisions that are solely on you- like simply choosing to show up and do the work. I’ve never once regretted doing the extra work, but I can say in my (long ago) athletic career my confidence never improved by doing less. Don’t be afraid to do the work alone at times- to be alone with yourself, your thoughts, your goals, your discipline.
