History should be taught honestly, including Jefferson’s relationship with Sally Hemings. But honesty also requires context. Their children were born into slavery because Virginia law dictated a child’s status followed the mother, and Jefferson ultimately freed or allowed each of their surviving children to leave slavery. Leaving out facts is advocacy, not history.
