The sewage scandal exposed in Channel 4’s Dirty Business relied on legal rights to obtain environmental information. Government reforms now under consideration could weaken those rights and make it harder to expose pollution in the future. @FishLegal_ the Angling Trust & @WindrushWasp have written to DEFRA today, read the statement: anglingtrust.net/2026/03/16/gov… #DirtyBusiness

🎣 Fishing will return to Wingerworth Lido under a new agreement between North East Derbyshire District Council and Clay Cross Angling Association. The licence includes safeguards to protect wildlife while ecological surveys begin to shape a new Improvement Plan for the site. A few pics from Llyn Morwynion, located near Blaenau Ffestiniog. This 'early season' mountain lake opened on 3rd March, with the Cambrian Angling Association, who offer day and season permits. These can be purchased through the club website or local outlets. #fishinginwales

Anglers are on the frontline of the water pollution crisis. Across the country, hundreds of volunteers are already testing water quality through the Angling Trust’s Water Quality Monitoring Network, collecting vital evidence about what’s happening to waterways. But we need more people involved. If you care about the future of our rivers, lakes & seas, join the fight against pollution. Find out how to get involved or support the campaign: anglingtrust.net/get-involved/a… Read the latest findings: anglingtrust.net/2026/03/04/how… Together we can hold polluters to account. #AnglersAgainstPollution #EndSewagePollution #DirtyBusiness

The scale of pollution in UK rivers is undeniable. The Angling Trust’s Water Quality Monitoring Network has collected over 12,000 water samples across the country, revealing persistent nutrient pollution and declining river health. Anglers are witnessing these problems first-hand and collecting the data to prove it. The findings have been highlighted in @thetimes, bringing more attention to the crisis facing UK rivers. UK rivers are suffocating. New data from the Angling Trust’s Water Quality Monitoring Network shows the scale of the pollution crisis in our rivers, with widespread failures for nutrients that fuel algal blooms and choke aquatic life. Thousands of water samples collected by volunteers reveal the truth about river health across the country. This is about the future of our rivers, wildlife and fisheries. New research has found antibiotic-resistant bacteria in 97% of river samples tested, including downstream of the Thames Water sewage works outfall in Oxford. Levels of ESBL bacteria, linked to antimicrobial resistance, were significantly higher below the treatment works and spiked further during a sewage spill. There are currently no legal limits for ESBLs in rivers. Backed by the Angling Trust @WindrushWasp is calling for year-round monitoring and urgent action. Antibiotic resistance is a global health threat. It should not be flowing through our rivers. Clean water matters for people, fish and the future. Why is it that it takes the likes of the tenacious Martin Smith, the Pickering Fishery Association and fearless @FishLegal_ to have to take govt to court and win, TWICE simply to get something done and even then I hear @EnvAgency are still prevaricating?
Martin Smith@x5mms

@bbcquestiontime I’m secretary of Pickering Fishery Association who have won 2 judicial reviews against Secretary of State to DEFRA pls ask Emma how she thinks they are cleaning up waterways

Speaking to the BBC, @FishLegal_ says Hampshire County Council could and should have acted already to stop vehicles driving through the River Meon, a globally rare chalk stream being damaged by 4x4s and bikes. Zoe Wedderburn-Day comments: "It's frustrating that they're delaying this because they could have acted any time, I understand why they're slightly fearful of doing it – that's not really good enough.” "If you look at the state of the river, this deserves to be protected. And as difficult as it might be to put in a traffic regulation order, they need to act now." Read more: bbc.co.uk/news/articles/… #EveryRiverCounts

The fact that 4x4 drivers are using a legal loophole to literally drive along the riverbed of a protected chalk stream riverbed is insane! bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
