The most perfect allegory for GWOT that could ever exist: A flag officer being absolutely wrong about who he was talking to/the situation. Does absolutely nothing to correct this wrong think or confirm his intel. Then takes the worst possible action based on his flawed reasoning and hubris. Then being completely unable to anticipate the response that said action would result in. Then being surprised by this result and unable to figure out what happened. Find me a more perfect allegorical situation for what our military members experienced during GWOT, I'll wait.
Cynical Publius@CynicalPublius

So today I had a retired US Navy three-star admiral accuse me of being a bot and having never served in the US military. I posted a rebuttal, which basically caused this Democrat admiral to get swarmed by a social media army of veterans (and patriotic non-veterans too). I truly appreciate the outpouring of support, but I am also quite interested in what this says about the mindset of America’s veteran community in 2026, writ large. Most of us? We served in the GWOT and are still angry about it. We are angry that we were sent to do impossible missions of building liberal institutions in 8th Century tribal societies. We’re angry about ridiculously restrictive ROE that got our friends killed. We are angry that for much of the wars we were inadequately resourced, driving soft-skinned HMMWVs down IED Alley. We are angry that we spent all those years to have, in the end, accomplished very little. We are angry at how the VA treated us when we got out. Most of all, we are angry about watching our friends get killed or maimed (or kill themselves when they got home), seemingly all for naught. And guess what? We are REALLY angry at the senior generals and admirals who led us down this path and never had the cajones to tell the civilian elected leadership what the real deal was. (We’re not angry at Pete Hegseth’s team—we’re angry at the generals and admirals who caused the problems he and his team are trying to fix.) That admiral who came at me today? He was one of those GWOT senior leaders. What you saw today was much less an outpouring of support for me and much more an outpouring of righteous anger at a righteous target. Just wanted to share my thoughts on this, it’s an interesting phenomenon.

@Rank1Apples Has happened. More than once. See: WMD. By the way there were WMD. Refer to my previous post to see why that story got twisted. One of my NCOs had a guy lose an arm to a mustard gas round.

In the olden days, an invasion required violence. Force of action. Warfare. Bold men. The weaklings who were often the victims of those invasions of yore have evolved, as mankind is wont to do. They discovered they could stage their **own invasions through corporate board rooms. Through a judge's bench. Through media and by hijacking the education system. This new form of Weakling Warfare is insidious and brilliant in its simplicity. To oversimplify what has been done to facilitate this new, brutal form of warfare, the invaders make it unlawful for the victims to protest their invasion and extermination. The Weakling Warlords wield extreme wealth instead of a broadsword, sweeping aside any protests in a purchased court of law while their purchased politicians patricianly pass proposed legislation on the part of the Weakling Warlords. Victory is assured, because resistance is racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, antisemitic, and bigoted. The world is out of balance.

Dear younger generations, You have to understand that late Generation Jones and early Gen X were basically raised in the great transitional period between “traditional America” and the modern hyperconnected world. Our parents often both worked. Many of us were latchkey kids before that even had a name. We came home to empty houses, made our own snacks, rode our bikes until the streetlights came on, and learned independence very early because there often wasn’t another option. And honestly? We loved a lot of it. We learned risk assessment by doing stupid things and surviving them. We learned conflict resolution without an HR department. We learned mechanical skills because things actually broke and had to be fixed. We learned how to navigate the world without GPS, how to socialize without screens, and how to entertain ourselves without algorithms feeding us dopamine every 14 seconds. Were there downsides? Absolutely. Some kids were neglected. Some carried trauma quietly. Some had far too much responsibility far too young. But there is also a reason many of us became fiercely independent, adaptable adults who can function under pressure without melting down because nobody was hovering over us every second of the day. And yes, the movies exaggerated it for entertainment. We were not all out fighting ghosts and hacking NORAD from our bedrooms. Most of us were just trying not to get caught jumping ramps on BMX bikes while somebody’s mom yelled from a porch three streets away. It was chaos. But it was our chaos. Life was better before helicopter moms and cell phones. Trust me.

Crazy Vibes@CrazyVibes_1

Dear Gen X, I’ve been watching 80s movies and I just need to know…WHERE WERE YOUR PARENTS?? Every child was just wandering the earth unsupervised like a raccoon with house keys. Riding bikes across town at midnight, fighting ghosts, investigating murders, befriending cryptids, hacking government computers for funsies… And the parents were ALWAYS “out of town” or “working late” while the only adult-adjacent supervision was some random 16-year-old who got dragged into the chaos. No cell phones. No helmets. No adult supervision. Just vibes, life lessons, and several near-death experiences. You all weren’t “raised.” You were lightly monitored feral creatures with a bike and unresolved trauma. I’m genuinely shocked there are enough of you left to populate an entire generation.

@Rank1Apples Press button one to directly boop. Press button two to top boop. If they can teach this to literally anyone (including Ukrainian conscripts) in a week it has to be easy. And it essentially kills anything on the ground and a good bit of your problems from the air.

A retired Navy Vice Admiral saw a critic on X and instantly called him a “bot who never served.” He was dead wrong. What happened next is a perfect case study in elite detachment, hubris, and why some at the top stop checking basic facts. Full article drops tomorrow morning at 0900. “The Dimming Light: Admiral Mike Franken’s Social Media Blunder and the Perils of Elite Detachment” Set your alarm. This one’s going to hit hard.
