Takaichi just won. Everything went perfectly for her at this summit. The ultimate fear in Japan was that Trump was going to press her on military support in Iran, and if she refused, turn on Japan the way he’s now lashing out at NATO. Takaichi instead was able to clearly convey that Japan would not be able to participate due to constitutional limitations, and actually got Trump to accept that reasoning.

Yes, I understand South Korea will have certain feelings about that but they can get over it. It's more valuable to symbolically bury the hatchet with our greatest ally than it is to appease one prone to meltdowns that constantly flirts with our adversaries.

After a quarter century flowing through the Army, rubbing up against all three components, being part of a CJIATF/SOJTF for OIR, etc., I can state emphatically that there is nothing about being a vet—yes, even a decorated combat vet—that immunizes a guy's after-service actions or words. Very often the vet shield is thrown up precisely when it ought to not be. Either by the vet, or the vet's friends, family, and followers.
