Don’t miss the 2025 Berggruen Prize Essay Competition Award Ceremony exclusively at SXSW in Austin. Join the ceremony honoring the 2025 winners and celebrating their winning essays. The English-language winner, Anil Seth, challenges prevailing assumptions about machine consciousness in his essay “The Mythology of Conscious AI.” The Chinese-language winners, Xin Huang and Xiaoben Liu, offer forward-looking philosophical frameworks on language, computation, and the future of consciousness. 📅 March 17, 2026 Happening soon—secure your spot and RSVP here: events.berggruen.org/_mzdzx

3/3 It's lovely to be back in Austin. But what's up with the crazy weather? how can it go from a high of 35 deg yesterday to a high of 14 today? Very strange behaviour.

I can't wait to bring you this conversation between @dr_mcgilchrist and @anilkseth on neuroscience, consciousness and God! They discuss left and right brain hemispheres, panpsychism, theories of consciousness and how meditation and prayer affect our psychology. Seth also describes his atheist-agnostic worldview, and McGilchrist explains his recent embrace of Christian faith. ✝️ ⭐️ Can't wait to Watch or Listen? Congrats @anilkseth . One takeaway from “Mythology of Conscious AI” I think is underappreciated: most “conscious AI” talk quietly assumes computational functionalism, then gets turbocharged by language driven anthropomorphism. That combo is a governance risk even if nothing is felt because “conscious seeming” systems trigger misplaced trust, moral standing, and deference.

@anilkseth @missSukiChan @aconitedocs @cphdox even better — memory and selfhood are where the science gets personal. the question of what makes 'you' continuous over time touches everything from patient amnesia to the ship of Theseus. hope it gets a wider release.

@anilkseth @missSukiChan @aconitedocs @cphdox a documentary on consciousness premiering at a major film festival feels like a sign the field is crossing over. curious whether it tackles the measurement problem — how do you film something that's fundamentally first-person? looking forward to hearing reactions.
