🚫We believe that the import of & use of macaques for scientific procedures is something that runs counter to the wishes of citizens in Scotland & that this issue must be aired during the Scottish Parliament Election campaign.

✋🏽Animal Welfare Party has long called for an end to these ‘flights of misery’, maintaining that the UK should close all ports & airports to the import of live animals to supply the animal testing industries. /

The long-tailed macaques, descendants of wild-caught animals, are raised in breeding facilities overseas before enduring gruelling flights into Manchester and onward journeys by road. /

🛩️ We understand that every month, hundreds of endangered monkeys are being flown into the UK via Manchester Airport as ‘live imports’ destined for vivisection laboratories across the UK, including laboratories in Scotland. /

🐒 During this election campaign, we have chosen to highlight the issue of animal use in science in Scotland and, in particular, the use of endangered, long-tailed macaques. /

⚖️ We are greatly encouraged that the Welsh Senedd and Scottish Parliaments both voted to ban greyhound racing last month, signalling a growing societal intolerance for cruel and exploitative activities involving animals.

💡AWP has long called for an end to the commercial racing of horses and dogs and for the Grand National Steeplechase to be banned.

🚫Following the deaths of four horses at Cheltenham ‘Festival’ last month, there are growing calls for all concerned citizens to boycott the Grand National, neither being involved in betting on or watching the event.

◼️AWP is appalled at the death of Gold Dancer on Day 2 of the Grand National ‘Festival’ at Aintree today. He is understood to have fallen & suffered a broken back, yet whipped to win the race and a reported sum of £67,524. He collapsed at the finish and was killed.

Gold Dancer is the 68th horse to have died at the Aintree ‘festival’ since the year 2000. Today’s horrific and yet predictable tragedy comes before the main ‘Grand National Steeplechase’ tomorrow, Sat. 11th April.
