In Deliverance (1972), Billy Redden, who played the young banjo player in the iconic “Dueling Banjos” scene, did not actually know how to play the banjo. To create the illusion, a musician hid behind him and reached through Redden’s sleeve to fret the strings while Redden mimed the picking with his own hand.
To make the performance look convincing, local banjo player Mike Addis hid behind Billy Redden and reached his left arm through Redden’s sleeve to fret the strings while Redden mimed the picking with his right hand. The final music heard in the film was added later using a studio recording.
Although the tune was originally written by Arthur “Guitar Boogie” Smith in 1955 as “Feudin’ Banjos,” Deliverance turned it into an international sensation. Released as “Dueling Banjos,” the recording reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, won a Grammy Award, and helped create one of the most memorable scenes in American film history.
