The safety of air travel isn’t the result of luck or fleeting political decisions—it’s the culmination of decades of regulation, investment in infrastructure, and a commitment to safety protocols, all shaped by leadership and continuity. Under previous administrations efforts to strengthen air safety through expanded air traffic control staffing and proactive safety measures led to an unprecedented record: zero commercial airline crash fatalities over millions of flights. But achievements like these don’t sustain themselves. Since taking office, President Trump made several controversial decisions that included cutting or suspending key aviation personnel and rolling back safety regulations under the guise of deregulation. I’m not saying it played a role in this crash for sure but… it could have. Leadership matters, and Trump's administration largely focused on short-term gains rather than systemic investments in public safety, as evidenced by his frequent emphasis on gutting oversight bodies across various sectors. When crises like air travel mishaps arise, they reveal the cracks created by shortsighted policies. Instead of deflecting responsibility, this is a moment when leadership requires reflection, transparency, and, most importantly, a plan. What should come next isn’t partisan finger-pointing but a clear, well-funded strategy to restore staffing levels, invest in modernizing air traffic control systems, and prioritize the safety of passengers over deregulation-driven politics. History proves that public safety is not a byproduct of market forces; it’s a deliberate outcome of leadership, investment, and accountability​​.

Despicable. As families grieve, Trump should be leading, not lying. We put safety first, drove down close calls, grew Air Traffic Control, and had zero commercial airline crash fatalities out of millions of flights on our watch. President Trump now oversees the military and the FAA. One of his first acts was to fire and suspend some of the key personnel who helped keep our skies safe. Time for the President to show actual leadership and explain what he will do to prevent this from happening again.
