News of the first NIH grant cuts at Columbia medical center have come in. Center grants (including of the diabetes center where I am), training grants for PhD students. PhD students are certainly not the reason for federal budget woes, they are among the most altruistically motivated people, often postponing their own personal dreams in favor of advancing human health. What an utter disappointment.

A driving assumption behind the admin's proposed restrictions on grants & aid seems to be that any use of "DEI" signals a political agenda that is antithetical to conducting good research. Let's unpack that. Why would DEI language be used in a grant?

In a new paper using @Add_Health, I find that young people disconnected from school and work during the transition to adulthood (ages 18-26) report greater depressive symptoms through early midlife relative to their peers.
