A new film from @AbbottNews is shining a light on the emotional and social barriers people with diabetes face in Ireland from shame and misconceptions to harmful media stereotypes.
53% of people with diabetes in Ireland have skipped medical appointments due to stigma.
67% have seen misleading portrayals of diabetes in the media.
70% say supportive words help them stay motivated.
It's time to change the conversation. Watch the film and explore how compassion, accurate information, and thoughtful language can make a real difference.

Are you living with type 2 diabetes and sometimes struggling with the demands it places on you and how much head space it takes up?
You know the advice and recommendations, but you find it challenging to implement them?
Do you sometimes feel people are judgmental when they learn you have diabetes, and you don’t know how to deal with it?
Does this sound like you?
Then why not sign up for Diabetes Ireland's FREE online group programme to learn strategies and better ways of coping with daily diabetes decisions.
The programme, which we developed and piloted in 2024 consists of weekly, 2 hours-long sessions within a time frame of a month.
Together with researchers from University College Dublin we are now carrying out research to evaluate if our 4-week programme can improve coping with diabetes, attitudes and approaches to managing the day-to-day challenges people living with Type 2 diabetes face.
If you wish to take part in these free workshops and help us evaluate if it works, click on the link or scan the QR Code. diabetes.ie/wellbeing/ #DiabetesIreland #EmpoweredLiving #Type2Diabetes

Well, new research we've funded might help us understand that 👩🏻🔬
We all have body fat, and the results show that where our genes instruct our bodies to store this fat plays an important role in changing our risk 🧬 👇🏾

If you receive your diabetes care in a DAFNE centre, and you’re being considered for a hybrid closed loop to help you manage your glucose, then ask your diabetes team about the DAFNE Closed Loop Essential Course.

Words are a powerful thing that can shape views, perceptions, beliefs & expectations.
How we talk about patients can dehumanise them & impact how we see them.
