Several years ago, I was at a low point. I was very discouraged professionally. My brother, who knew I was struggling, was a little discouraged, himself. But he still sent me a note in the mail. A portion of it is below. (This note still sits on a shelf in my office.)

Great educators are not defined by the test scores they generate or the programs they implement. I think their greatness is found in the hundreds of little interactions they have with students every day. They are what will be remembered. They are what make a difference for kids.

Meg fell asleep in class yesterday. I let her. I didn't take it personally. She has zero-hour math, farm-girl chores, state-qualifying 4X400 fatigue, adolescent angst, and various other things to deal with. My class is only a part of her life, not her life. No, she did not use
