How can Esther Rantzen say that the majority of people are in favour of assisted dying? Has there been a referendum that I’ve missed ? #BBCBreakfast

I’ve been increasingly impressed with Zac Polanski and the Green Party. However after listening to him on #bbclaurak I don’t think he is strong enough as a leader. His insistence that continued diplomacy would have been the best way forward is incredibly naive. #GreenParty

Left: Rylan, "If I arrive on a boat in Calais, I get taken to a four star hotel" Right: Newsnight show what one of these four star hotels looks like once it has been adapted to house four asylum seekers in a single room with two bunkbeds and a tacky divider Dear @Rylan some of your concern is perfectly normal and valid, and with 70,000 spaces in asylum accommodation oversubscribed because the Conservatives cut funding to assessing asylum seeker claims resulting in setting up hotels to house asylum seekers, awarding some contracts well over £1 billion to hotel owners, some of who have also been donors to the Conservative party, the whole thing stinks But what's worse is that you've repeated some mistruths and false statements about asylum seekers in your rant, and while I don't blame you for having expressed those views as Keir-island-of-strangers-Starmer, instead of challenging and correcting these falsehoods, has decided to become a pound shop Reform-like populist with his divisive rhetoric, who could blame you for being so misinformed? I encourage you to seek better information, better explanations, and perhaps if it really bothers you, to use your huge reach and platform to petition our government to do better eg ending homelessness Remember how at the start of covid we managed to end homelessness within a few days? Not only is it possible but it's simply a question of government policy (in fairness to Labour they are doing quite a lot, just not enough and not at the speed they could be doing it) But, and I say this politely. Reform UK are not your friends. By wanting to take us out of the European Convention of Human Rights and repeal the Human Rights Act, they're taking away the very institutions that helped shape gay rights in our country and allowed you not only to flourish, but simply have the right to live your life however you wish - the moment those protections and rights are lost, society suffers There's nothing worse than getting angry and upset at incorrect things e.g. the four star hotel trope often levied by the far right Instead, become better informed, so you can get angry and upset at the actual things that are wrong with the system, and help campaign to change them

One wonders if Richard would even let him pray here - let alone spend his Dollars on Cotswold produce, driving in some small way… economic growth and prosperity. An advert for the wonder of rural England. I suspect after his trip he’ll not bother again anytime soon

All this is to undermine Kemi Badenoch ( I’m not a fan btw) Robert Jenrick is still sore from losing the leadership contest. Self- interest before party unity - tells you all you need to know.

@whataimeereads_ @matthaig1 I turned to Matt Haig during a difficult time - I started with Reasons to stay Alive. Then I found the Midnight Library - which made me think about my perspective on life. The classic I always go back to is Tess of the D’Urbervilles 💔

Here's a little story you never asked for. I used to read as a child, CONSTANTLY. If you ever saw me, I had a book in my hand. I then became a mother to my eldest and didn't have the time nor interest anymore, maybe a few books here and there. Fast forward six years, my youngest daughter ended up in hospital she was only a few months old at the time with an infection, which meant we had to be locked in quarantine. I picked up @matthaig1 'The Midnight Library' a few days before and took it in with me. This totally changed my brain chemistry, and alongside Wuthering Heights, this would be one of my favourite books ever. Which finally got me back into reading and explains where I am today. If you've made this far into the post... What's the book that got you back into reading?

Fixing potholes and increasing bin collections? How will they be funded ? Zia Yusuf had no idea how much cutting EDI initiatives would generate. How can you promise things when you have no idea of your budget?

#bbclaurak Reform say what they think people want to hear without having any idea on how to deliver. Zia Yisuf’s answers weren’t just sketchy, they contained no substance at all.

Man jailed for hitting Surrey Police dog with a metal pole 😡 PD Ludo was hit several times with a pole in Staines in September 2024. This is Surrey's first prosecution under Finn's Law, legislation that is designed to protect service animals. Moore was sentenced to three months imprisonment, followed by an 18-month suspended sentence. To think that only just a few years ago this would have probably been shrugged off that they couldn’t charge with anything. To see that Finn’s legacy is now helping to secure prosecutions on people who are set to injure our service animals makes me feel so proud. I wish PD Ludo all the best in his retirement, he certainly deserves it 🐾 #FabulousFinn #Finnslaw #FinnsLawPart2 #retiredpolicedogs

#BBLauraK Very impressive performance by Jonathan Reynolds. Fully on top of his brief - able to give specific examples when pressed by Victoria Derbyshire - no waffle, no soundbites.

Just asked my 20yro son if going out tonight is a good idea when he has work in the morning, deliberately ignoring all the times when I was his age I’d go out then go to work the next day after 3 hours sleep, with a stamp from a club on my hand, and possibly still a bit drunk.

@DaleVince Did you? Richard Madely is the king of ‘gotcha’ - well he tries to be. When he comes up against anyone who has acted honestly and with integrity so he can’t trip them up, he gets really annoyed and sulks .

I was on Good Morning Britain today - to talk about my call for elections to be publicly funded. I expected a more positive approach, silly me. Richard M opened by saying I’d only called for this because of Musk’s threat to fund Reform, that was my first correction, I’ve been saying it for a long time. He also said I want ‘you the tax payer’ to pay for this - which I corrected to ‘we taxpayers’. He went on to refer to £6m I’d given to labour then said £7m in his next sentence….who knows why - it’s more like £5.5m. I explained why we should publicly fund elections, how little it would cost (£20m per year) and contrasted that to our £2.5Trillion economy - seemed lost on both presenters as they then went on to cite the planning permission granted last week for a big solar project of ours (called Heck Fen) and cited it as an example of influence. I told them it was a perfect of example of what I had just said, people assume money is given in return for something, that’s why we need public funding of elections. We don’t like the donor system at all - so let’s replace it and take out any possibility and all suggestions of influence. By the end I was left shaking my head and Richard said well you’ve corrected us where you think we needed it and we’ve heard you…..decent enough ending. But I expected a better discussion.
