Is drafting high better than drafting low? Yes. Does drafting low mean you cant get elite talent? No. Does drafting high guarantee you an elite talent? No. You can offer up all the correlation wrapped up as causation you'd like but performance not position is what matters.

Drafting top 5 (or acquiring them) & the list looks very different. Moving them for big assets can also be very valuable (ex, LA Johnson #3 for Carter / TB - Drouin #3 for Sergachev / FLA Huberdeau #3 for Tkachuk, etc)

Drysdale is maturing nicely, as sexy as Gauthier right now? Nope. PHI needed a dman, got a guy drafted top 6, and under 25 to grow with the window. ALso got a 2nd. We'll see how Drysdale's game continues to develop but I wouldnt be down on the move - yet. Hell, is Cutter having a gonzo year with Dvorak or Cates as his center?

👆the moment you realize you're stuck defending a popularity contest and cant get out so you try to toss an insult and run away.. The problem of course with "most of you" is that a team can't realistically have a chance to win the Stanley cup until the playoffs start and even then, the chances are pretty slim until the field narrows significantly. Popularity contests are what they are. Would you like to review the preseason and early season "contenders" to go over why its a horrible misuse of the word and generally a bad idea? Which is your favorite Era?

Were they a cup favorite, sure? Should they have been? absolutely. Did they, contend for the cup? no. They lost in the first round - you cant contend for the cup from there. A contender needs to have a legitimate path to the cup - losing in round 1 kind closes off the path abruptly and early.

No, you are absolutely a contender for the Stanley Cup if you make the Final. Two teams in contention for the prize. Hell, Id argue being in the conference final probably makes you a contender...but you're over here saying 16 teams contend and hell may be more because you dont even have to make the playoffs to be a contender let alone win in them. You're talking about preseason popularity polls and I'm talking results.

The issue here is your naming contenders before games a played based on opinions and not results - lots of on paper contenders never get beyond the 1st round... Perhaps find a better word?
