A gentle rebuke to some of my fellow believers on social media: Love everyone (Matthew 22:29-31.) Love your enemies (Matthew 5:43-48.) Love those who "hate" you online and do not insult them (1 Peter 3:9.) I'm not asking you to hold back from speaking the truth. Call sin, sin. Stand for righteousness. Boldly declare that Jesus "is the way and truth and the life and the nobody comes to the Father except through" him (John 14:6.) But declare everything in love and out of love for the person you are differing with online. Be kind. Refuse to quarrel and quibble. Be patient with those you differ with as you share God's truth online and in person. Too many Christians on social media flat out disobey 2 Timothy 2:23-26, "A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people's hearts, and they will learn the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil's trap." I wonder what the watching world thinks when Calvinists attack Arminians with such smugness (or vice-versa) or conservatives attack liberals with such venom (or vice-versa.) I wonder what the watching world thinks when they see Christian @youtube influencers who exist only to attack other points of view and take pleasure in tearing them apart? They must wonder if we serve a quarreling, hate-fueled God. Jesus told his disciples the night before he was crucified, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." John 13:34. Let's love everyone like Jesus did. He spoke the truth clearly and unflinchingly, but nobody ever wondered if he loved them. Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us love one another as Jesus has loved us.
