#MarketingGenius or #EpicFail? Back in 2010, I launched a local energy drink called Beantown (which later became Bawstins) in the New England market. The competition was brutal. Red Bull dominated shelf space, followed by Monster, with Rockstar trailing behind. We didn’t have millions of dollars for marketing, so we had to get creative to build brand awareness. We noticed a larger percentage of our consumers were men, so we thought… where’s one place every guy goes when they’re out? The restroom. So we came up with a guerrilla marketing idea: urinal mats that said our drink was “Wicked Pissa!” Very Boston. Very memorable. We thought we had cracked the code. The problem? We didn’t account for the mats blocking proper water flow. Instead of just marketing the brand… we flooded a bunch of bathrooms and ended up losing some very big accounts. Lesson learned. At one point we were in 400+ locations, and while the brand didn’t ultimately succeed, the experience taught me lessons about marketing, risk, and problem-solving that I still use today running @FTFofAmerica Sometimes your biggest “failures” turn out to be your most valuable business education.
