They got married in February 2023 with so much joy and dreams. The wedding wasn’t even extravagant. Just two families, small hall, rice, small chops and a budget of about ₦3.8 million raised through savings and contributions. Three months later reality set in. House rent in Abuja was ₦1.4 million yearly. Transportation kept increasing. Food prices became a nightmare. A crate of eggs that was once ₦2,300 suddenly became almost ₦6,000. His salary was ₦185,000 monthly and her own was ₦95,000. After paying rent, electricity, internet subscription, church commitments and supporting both families, they were practically surviving on prayers alone. Some nights they would smile on Instagram and cry immediately after putting off the ring light. Then came the hardest decision. The husband decided to japa to the UK. They borrowed ₦9.5 million for processing, visa, flight ticket and agency fees. Sold his car for ₦3.2 million and emptied their joint savings. The day he left Nigeria, his wife acted strong at the airport. But immediately she entered the taxi back home, she broke down crying. People think japa is enjoyment until they hear the hidden stories. This man that used to sleep beside his wife every night started working 12-hour shifts in cold weather, eating bread at midnight and calculating pounds to naira every single day. The wife back home started facing loneliness, NEPA wahala, landlord pressure and random “your husband don travel leave you” comments from people. Some nights they fought over phone because of frustration. Some nights they slept on video calls in silence because words were no longer enough. But slowly things started changing. The first ₦1.8 million he sent cleared debts. The next money renewed rent. Then he sent enough for her to start a small business. Two years later, they finally sat in their small apartment abroad together again. Not rich yet. Not fully settled. But at least now, survival no longer feels like war. Sometimes love is not flowers and matching pajamas. Sometimes love is two people enduring distance, loneliness and suffering just to build a future that Nigeria made impossible for them to build comfortably at home.

Unrelated, but “pet peeves” is one of the most misleading English phrases. Anyone coming across it for the first time would think they are being asked for their favorite things or something related to pets. The word “pet” in it easily throws people off. Another example is “rain check.” If you see it for the first time, you likely won’t think it means declining an invitation with the intention of accepting it later. You might assume it means something completely different. What other words or phrases do you think fall into this category, where the literal wording makes people interpret it differently before they learn the actual meaning?

It took me 5 months and about 25 interviews to land my first job in Canada 🇨🇦 But there is one I will never forget. I applied for a Canadian government role. French was listed as a requirement. I applied anyway. Got through the first stage. No French was tested. Second and final stage. I joined the call. Bonjour bonjour. (As how?) I thought that was just the greeting. The interviewer then calmly informed me that the entire interview would be conducted in French. I could feel my intestines shift. I said okay. A certified Duolingo dropout sitting in silence. The first question came. 45 seconds of full Québécois French. I waited for them to finish. Then I slowly asked if they could repeat the question in English. They did. Politely. I answered. Then they asked if I had any questions for them. That was it. Interview over. I never got a rejection email. Not one. They were too pissed to even send it 😭 What is your craziest job interview moment in diaspora or back home?

Bro. Genuinely hate greedy people. Met this POS guy at the park on Monday . I wanted to withdraw 7k to give to a driver that brought an item for me. “How much for 7k”- he said ₦200. I was like, “okay. Just give me 10k”- he said ₦300 “How much is 5k”- he said ₦100 I just hissed and walked away laughing. The extra ₦100 wasn’t the issue.

@Shyle555 @DrJoeAbah Why should one be ashamed an injustice has been done to them? Just because people used to do something in the past doesn't make it not stupid. This one here is stupid. Absolutely no reason why one should be ashamed because another person cheated on them.

@DrJoeAbah The things we see these days... Pathetic! I remember growing up, it was shameful to a man, if he is cheated on. Man would rather conceal that info... Now ehn, they set the ring light, speak about it, cry like babies and whip up sympathy

So, as a man, you came on Twitter to tell the whole world how your wife cheated on you or how you cheated on your wife. Please what exactly do you hope to achieve with that? What do you want a possible future wife to think of you, other than that you’re a weak and inferior man?🙄

One cultural shock I noticed growing up is how different cultures handle the death of young people. In Yoruba culture, when a young person dies, everything is usually quiet and lowkey. Sometimes there won’t even be obituary graphics, they’ll just bury the person quietly. But it’s quite different in Igbo culture. God rest his soul.

My mummy will beat me, my mummy will beat me if I don't get my bucket. that was the statement that led this young lad to a drastic decision that ended his life. while the other students were chased out from school hostel to attend may devotion. he sneaked out with some of his friends, to the reservoir where his buckets reportedly fell in. he told his friends to tie his his hands. with rope so he could easily slide into and out the reservoir with his bucket, out of ignorance, they did. the rope cut because his weight is obviously heavier, and that was how he fell inside and got drowned. I wished he knew how important he was to his mum than the supposed bucket that bothered him. This death is really devastating because it is avoidable. a very reckless death that could have been avoided only if the school had a good and convenient provision of water supply. it is so unfortunate that A school as big as C.I.C enugu funded by the mission has no borehole despite their huge amount of school fees. they can afford it, if they had really paid attention to it. this is the only promising child of a parents, sent to school to study and have a brighter future, only to be brought back home in corpse. My sincere condolence to the family. it's so disheartening. © chinenye blessing

@maternalgroyp @Dogula66 That's crazy tho. Are you saying there is no window of say 30m to 1hour where they can come visit and get out of your hair in recovery or you're just being rigid on purpose?

@Dogula66 I wouldn’t want parents in the recovery room either ! I’m still naked, sitting in a pool of blood, exhausted, crying, in INTENSE pain, baby also naked and latched to my nipple nonstop - not a good time for visitors for me.

Isn’t the main difference that you are laying there naked, bleeding, milk leaking, and your own mother has seen you naked and it’s your own bloodline but your inlaws it would be way more awkward and inappropriate? Why is waiting an extra 24 hours until you go home and are dressed, settled in, etc. for them to come see the baby a huge deal ?
Taryn@TarynA83

Ladies. I am telling you this right now. Your husband’s family matters when you have a baby. You can say they aren’t allowed in for delivery. You can ask for limited time visits. You can ask for your husband to entertain and introduce the baby if you want to stay in bed. BUT- asking his parents/grandparents to wait to meet them while you let your family in is cruel and selfish. EVEN IF they might annoy you, or his mom is an attention hog, your baby is just as much your husband’s. Your recovery needs matter, but alienating them is wrong.

EFCC officers came in some minutes past 9 this morning looking for our dear Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery. At the time, he was in surgery working on a patient and asked them to hold on, but they didn’t. Instead, they dragged him out, brutalized him, and dragged him on the ground into their bus. Not only did they do that to him, but also to the CMAC of UUTH. He wasn’t even given a chance. The security at the gate locked the entrance, and doctors came out angrily, parking cars to block them from leaving the hospital. These inhumane people, who honestly need proper training after the police and military, opened tear gas, fired bullets, and rained chaos everywhere. In fact, permit me to add that a senior officer among them was allegedly telling his teammates to shoot at the angry crowd. In a hospital??? With patients and doctors around??? They broke the padlock, caused serious commotion and traffic in the area. I truly thank God for my life, but from what I later heard, a stray bullet hit someone and the person died. Currently, UUTH is shutting down. We were asked to go home. Patients are being forced to leave. A strike is imminent. If you have any relatives there, please do well to check up on them immediately. Things are getting serious, and it will not get better until we stand up and fight this injustice. If it was a politician with the same years of experience as these professors, they would never have been treated this way. I have attached evidence. Please, this should spread everywhere. Tag everyone. Medical lives matter.
