Gaga spends too much energy trying to prove she’s an artist instead of simply being one. The constant need for credibility narratives, reinventions & validation sometimes feels more calculated than instinctive. The most iconic pop stars didn’t convince people they were icons.

In hindsight, The Fame has a lot of filler and feels like a watered-down Gwen Stefani imitation. That’s probably why they fused it with Monster and market them as one era. Together, they make one decent record. Separately, both are pretty mid overall.
