🚂 The Department for Transport has revealed that services will begin calling at Cambridge South on Sunday, 28 June, and it will be the first Great British Railways-branded station in the country. The station is expected to welcome 1.8 million passengers annually and will see nine trains an hour to the centre of Cambridge. Jeremy Westlake, chief executive of Network Rail, said: "We're excited to welcome passengers to this landmark station from next month, providing direct access to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and better connections across the UK and beyond." As soon as it opens, services operated by Great Anglia, Great Northern, Thameslink and CrossCountry will all call at the station. It will also act as a direct link to the city's Biomedical Campus. There will be up to 20 services calling at the station during peak hours, with passengers able to travel to London, Birmingham, Stansted Airport and international rail services via St Pancras. The project has been built with £250m worth of funding from the government alongside £5m contributions from AstraZeneca, Cambridge & Peterborough Combined Authority and the Greater Cambridgeshire Partnership. Westlake said: "Cambridge South station will significantly improve travel and connectivity for campus staff, visitors, and the wider community for many years to come. "Thousands of people have worked tirelessly on this fantastic project... we're really proud of the result and the role it will play in connecting people to jobs, research and opportunity across the region." An iconic British rail service will return to London for the first time in years. Rail operator LNER will reinstate a Flying Scotsman service from London’s King's Cross more than 100 years after it began operating. A daily service – using LNER Azuma trains – will now depart from both Edinburgh and London at 10am and 10.30am respectively. Historically, the Flying Scotsman operated two simultaneous 10am departures from London King’s Cross and the Scottish capital. 🚂 Southeastern has become the first train operator in the UK to automatically communicate planned timetable changes to passengers at stations on a service-by-service basis, following a major £260k upgrade to its Customer Information System. As a result of the investment, timetable changes are automatically compared and assessed, with clear messages generated for every revised service explaining what has changed. 🚂 TransPennine Express (TPE) will add eight new overnight services between the UK's third busiest airport and Manchester Piccadilly from 17 May, roughly every hour. A TPE spokesperson said the changes would improve connectivity for passengers travelling early in the morning or late at night. The 08:05 weekday services between Leeds and Manchester Piccadilly will now also call at Dewsbury to help students and commuters on early morning journeys, TPE said.
