I’m probably late to this but in the book Odysseus does something more interesting than the arrow. He tells the cyclops his name is “Nobody” so when the neighboring cyclops ask him who hurt him, he says “Nobody is killing me” so they shrug and leave
And it gets better. Nobody in Greek is “outis” but when the other cyclops use the word as a question, the grammar changes outis to mē tis which sounds like mētis = cunning. Homer refers to Odysseus as “polymētis,” man of many wiles. So the cyclops unknowingly say “Cunning is killing him”
But Odysseus wants more credit, he can’t help himself, so he shouts his real name as he sails away. That’s why when the cyclops prays to Poseidon to punish his opp he gets the right guy.
In the movie Odysseus doesn’t say all that, instead he shoots the arrow after the cyclops spits out the helmet. Nolan makes it look like anger/revenge but it’s hubris. The point is that he does something he clearly doesn’t need to do, the result is that more men die and the ones who survive are rightfully more resentful.
If you remember in the cave the crew doesn’t want to abandon the guys who got torn apart or eaten. Odysseus says something like “they died so we could leave, we honor them by leaving.” In both the book and movie, just leaving isn’t enough. Who pays the bigger price? Not Odysseus. His men slowly realize that the guy saving them is the same guy who will get them killed.
What good is wanting to honor the dead if you’re the guy causing it?

Why did Odysseus shoot the Cyclops after escaping?
