4) Amazon By the time I got to Amazon, I had learned to ask for more, to negotiate both salary *and* equity, and to understand the full package. I asked for both more stock and more cash than the initial offer contained. They didn’t give me more cash, but they doubled the stock... and everyone knows how Amazon stock did over time.  I believe the offer went from 1K shares to 2K shares, and 2000 shares of Amazon in 2005 would become very valuable in the coming years. Over time, stock would come to represent between 80% and 90% of my total comp each year. Lesson: Stock ended up mattering much more in my life than cash did. This was true when I missed out on being a young millionaire and when Amazon generated the majority of my wealth.

My best year at Amazon I earned over $2M. My target comp was "only" $900k. I did not get there without negotiation. Here are a few of the negotiations that got me there, both wins and losses:
