I'm tired of the 'lazy politics' from the Tories referring to the RMT & rail strikes as 'militant'. The RMT set out their case. 40,000 members were balloted. Legal thresholds required to take industrial action were exceeded. It's called democracy in action. #ToryRailStrikes

The audacity of the Shadow Chancellor attacking this Government for agreeing a deal with the BMA. The price of Conservative failure was 1.5 million delayed and cancelled appointments and £1.7 billion. We’re cleaning up their mess 👇🏻

I'm pleased to announce we have negotiated an offer with the @BMA_JuniorDocs. This can bring an end to strike action, and begin the process of rebuilding our NHS. I urge junior doctors to accept. Let's work together to turn the NHS around.

It will probably come as no surprise to anyone to learn the “black hole” in the UK’s public finances is equivalent to the Conservative Party’s pre-election National Insurance cuts politics.co.uk/news/2024/07/2…

@Jacob_Rees_Mogg Methinks that's a load of poppycock Mr Rees-Mogg. The Tories record on the economy was dreadful. The roof wasn't 'fixed whilst the sun was shining', it was 'burnt to the ground' along with the house and now the process of rebuilding under Labour has begun.

Ten years ago this month that David Cameron dispensed with my services as AG. I had told him that his plans to scrap the HRA and threaten to leave the ECHR if it proved incompatible with his British Bill of Rights were unworkable and would not help solve our security or immigration challenges one bit. So it proved. When published, his plans were quickly shown to be flawed and never implemented. Ten years on, despite the repeated huffing and puffing, we still have both the HRA and the ECHR. This despite having had Suella Braverman as both Home Secretary and as a parody AG. One might have hoped that the penny would have dropped that the policy serves no useful purpose, as any minor benefit will be entirely outweighed by the downsides. We must be thankful that Rishi Sunak seems to have realised this as did the last AG Victoria Prentis. So it is depressing to see candidates for the Conservative leadership such as Tom Tugendhat return yet again to this theme. It has become a kind of ritual, without which no candidate feels they could be acceptable to the membership. And that I am afraid also shows how the Conservative Party continues to be mired in ideological fantasies that lead directly to its wipe out this year. For a Party whose members used to laugh at the inanity of Labour supporters singing the Red Flag at the end of their conferences, it is a sad reflection on where common sense has gone.

After a second constructive meeting, I am pleased to announce that we will enter formal negotiations with the BMA junior doctors’ committee on Tuesday. This is a crucial step forward, as we work to end this dispute and change the way junior doctors are treated in the NHS.

@nowak_paul Austerity was a political choice that had devastating consequences for many. The Tories told us 'we are all in it together'. National debt in 2010 was 69% of GDP. When the Tories left office 2 wks ago it was almost 100% & yet the 'A' word was never mentioned...can't think why!

@PeterStefanovi2 That 14 failed & chaotic Tory years are already beginning to feel distant is a measure of how far a Labour government have travelled forward in just two weeks. Serious politics & serious politicians whose job is to serve & who put country above party can & do make a difference.

As I’ve said many times over the past week scrapping the #RwandaScheme sends a clear message to the world that the UK’s hard-won reputation for the rule of law and human rights is now in safe hands. This brilliant speech from @Keir_Starmer reinforces it👏

It is oddly startling to hear these words coming from a British Prime Minister. And also great.

The Tories may now be thankfully out of power but the devastation their austerity policies inflicted is still being deeply felt. The seeds of worsening public services, a NHS in need of life support & hope ripped away from millions, were sown with Tory austerity in 2010.

It's only been two weeks since the General Election. The wounds fourteen chaotic Tory years in government inflicted with austerity, infighting over the EU & a revolving door of Minister's & Prime Minister's will take years to heal. Under Labour the process of healing has begun.

A world in which Tom’s government dismantled the criminal justice system through a decade of defunding, leaving our prisons overflowing. It is also the world in which Tom’s own government released 10,083 criminals onto our streets, for the very same reasons.

One week into a Labour government & already the Tories feel like a very distant memory. That's what progressive, positive & professional government can do & make people feel. Labour have hit the ground not just running but sprinting. Long may it continue. #ThursdayThoughts

A reminder that Kemi Badenoch, who is now the frontrunner to succeed Rishi Sunak as Conservative party leader, previously admitted to hacking and vandalising a Labour MP's website. At the time this was an offence carrying a sentence of up to five years in prison
