It's taken me 45 trips around the sun, but for the first time in my life I know what it feels like to have a "band-aid" in my own skin tone. You can barely even spot it in the first image. For real I'm holding back tears.

The Crown broke a promise to First Nations. It could now owe billions. "The annuity was small at first. But the treaties contained a novel clause: If the land produced in the future an amount that would allow the government 'without incurring loss'..." washingtonpost.com/world/2024/01/…

@DeLoach_NC And honestly, we need more White folks to call out this nonsense. Because when I was growing up, too many folks just let these racist lies slide.

"Symbols matter,” the mayor said in explaining why she thought the statue had to go. “They tell the world what we stand for and what we aspire to be. By removing the confederate monument from Springfield Park, we signal a belief in our shared humanity." washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/12…

Amen. He literally should have been required to empty his pockets, turn over his wallet, surrender his car key fobs, and enter his bank account login information into a browser on the way out of the court room. He had/has utter disdain for a fair democracy/republic.
Maya Wiley@mayawiley

We all owe Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss for their service to our democracy. They served democracy at the polls and they helped protect it by holding dangerous defamer Rudy Giuliani accountable.

@Nnedi Sometimes I wonder if all those UFOs are their video-capturing drones, capturing footage for their David Attenborough to narrate how utterly insane and cruel our most of our species is to each other, and indeed the planet.

This photo is excruciating. The terror is palpable. Never forget that Black Americans sacrificed their children to build this democracy & rehabilitate the humanity of a country that traded it for power & profit. And we are still sacrificing & fighting everyday to perfect America.

If you live anywhere within six hours driving distance or a short plane ride of the @deyoungmuseum, this Kehinde Wiley exhibit is 100% worth the effort. Open until Oct 15. The free audio tour is also a must. Believe me, make a special trip to San Francisco just to see it.
KQED@KQED

Kehinde Wiley @kehindewileyart's exhibition 'An Archaeology of Silence' tells the story of Black lives lost – and continue to lose – to racist, systemic violence. The collection of oil paintings and bronze sculptures is on view at @deyoungmuseum on Oct. 15 kqed.org/arts/13926546/…

"...Just it being presented to the world changes what we think about, changes how we think. Changes the conversations that we would have or wouldn't be having if weren't so provoked. That's the power of art." - Hidari Davis on free audio tour, "Archaeology of Silence" #deYoung

Formerly enslaved people were saying everywhere to Union officials: Do not abolish slavery and leave us landless. Do not leave us landless and force us to work the land of our former enslavers. Do not force us to work the land of our former enslavers and call that *freedom.* 4/

@BiggestttHater There were some people who read too much into it, and others who read too little. But on balance, I was happy it sparked a lot of introspection and understanding about inclusion, exclusion and belonging with the help of responses from women of color in particular.
