The World’s First Driverless Bus Operations Have Begun After many years of continuous operations in Stavanger, another milestone has been achieved. Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK automated by ADASTEC’s SAE Level-4 automated driving software, flowride.ai, has now received approval to operate without a safety driver. In Stavanger, where several firsts in automated public transport have been realized, including Europe’s first automated bus operations, deployment on open public roads, carrying ticketed passengers and tunnel handling another milestone has been achieved, marking the beginning of driverless operations. The vehicle is now starting to carry passengers without a safety driver on a BRT line. Operating on a 10 km dedicated route between the hospital and the university, it will transport passengers autonomously in designated sections, five days a week between 06:00–13:00. The milestone was marked through a dedicated ceremony and a live driverless showcase.
