After dedicating 10 years as principal of Burgess-Peterson Academy in east Atlanta, David White stepped away from leadership and into retirement last year. But what many imagine as a time of rest quickly became something else; he found himself missing the daily connections, the energy of students, and the sense of purpose that came with being part of a school community. Determined to reconnect with what he loved most, White didn’t stay away for long. When the opportunity arose to return as the school’s site manager just eight months later, he embraced it wholeheartedly. Now, instead of leading from the front office, he supports the school in a new way, ensuring the campus runs smoothly while continuing to build meaningful relationships with students and staff. His return as a Site Manager is a powerful reminder that passion for education doesn’t simply end at retirement….it evolves! #APSNews #APSExcellence Video credit (ANF: Atlanta News First)

We had the pleasure of welcoming Leadership APS cohort member Aprille Moore to Atlanta Public Schools, where she spent the day shadowing school leadership at Frederick Douglass High School alongside Principal Shermaine Jennings. From engaging with students and staff🤝to experiencing the day-to-day realities of leading a high school, it was an immersive and inspiring visit. Principal Jennings’ hands-on leadership and deep commitment to student success were evident throughout the day and clearly felt by the school community. Through experiences like these, Leadership APS continues to build strong connections between our schools and community leaders, advancing a shared vision of equity, excellence, and opportunity for every student.🚀  #LeadershipAPS #AtlantaPublicSchools

Moments like this go far beyond conversation; they spark collaboration, strengthen relationships, and reinforce the collective responsibility we all share. This is how we build momentum. This is how we create impact. And most importantly, this is how we set a strong, intentional tone for our APS scholars and the future leaders they are becoming. #AtlantaPublicSchools

Today’s Teacher Highlight goes to Crystal McClain, 6th & 8th Grade ELA teacher at Crawford W. Long Middle School! School leadership shared how Ms. McClain sets the tone from beginning to end—holding high expectations for every scholar while ensuring they have the support needed to succeed. When students face challenges, she goes above and beyond to help them navigate and find solutions. Ms. McClain truly understands that meeting expectations starts with meeting students where they are—and that’s what makes her impact so powerful. Thank you, Ms. McClain, for your dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to your students. We appreciate you! #APSExcellence #OurStrenghtisOurTeam #TeamAPS

#PartnershipsMatter The ribbon-cutting at the Henry Louis “Hank” Aaron New Beginnings Academy recently unveiled a neighborhood pantry today! Seeing the new neighborhood pantry come to life—made possible through the partnership between MUST Ministries and Kroger—was a powerful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together with purpose and compassion. This pantry is more than just a resource; it’s a lifeline for so many students and families. It means fewer children will have to sit in class distracted by hunger, and more will be able to focus, learn, and simply enjoy being students. It brings a sense of security, dignity, and hope to those who need it most. Leaders from both organizations shared their commitment to ensuring that no student goes hungry, and you could feel the sincerity behind those words. It’s partnerships like these that truly uplift our school communities, helping every student have a fair chance to succeed and reach their full potential.
