On this day, 13 May 1992; the mountains lost one of their greatest pioneers, 🇵🇱 Wanda Rutkiewicz. A legendary Polish climber, Wanda became the first woman in history to summit K2 (8,611m), the world’s second-highest mountain. She was also the first Pole, the first European woman, and the third woman ever to stand on the summit of Mt Everest (8,848.86m). Fearless, determined, and far ahead of her time, Wanda broke barriers in the male-dominated world of high-altitude mountaineering and inspired generations of climbers around the world. During an attempt on Kangchenjunga (8,586m), the world’s third-highest mountain, Wanda disappeared high on the mountain on 13 May 1992. She was 49 years old. Her body was never found.
