A year ago today, I received the epitomal "congratulations, Dr." handshake. While it was a good feeling, there was underlying dread that my time doing science for a living was over. Given that, and current political events, I'm incredibly grateful to still be doing what I love.

My lab threw me a little graduation celebration, complete with a silly mock commencement. My advisor played "The Circle of Life" which spurred a glorious Simba moment. We got plenty of ridiculous photos and even managed one "normal" one. I love these people. ☺️💖

Lots of exciting news from the Bowers lab: Kelly O'Neil successfully defended her thesis "Can beggars be choosers?" and was awarded the Eugene Odum Award for her presentation at the ASB 2024 conference in Chattanooga 🥳🪇🪹

In addition, the Bowers lab was awarded ont one but two research grants by the Tennessee Ornithological Society 🥳🪇💸

Even more good news this week: We were awarded a grant from Tennessee Ornithological Society for our Bird Safe Memphis initiative to help install @FeatherFriendly films on problematic windows on campus. We begin our collision surveys for spring migration on Monday.

Also had the pleasure of meeting some brilliant and kind people at #ASB2024, such as Lynn Siefferman and Lori Cruze and their impressive students.

Am I sciencing hard enough? On Tuesday, I successfully defended my dissertation. Then I gave two more talks at #ASB2024 and was honored to receive the Eugene P Odum Presentation Award from @ESA_org SE Chapter. Immense gratitude to my advisor, lab, committee, and @UofMemphisBio.
