Before laying a single brick, the architect came to speak with the village elders. He asked permission. He asked where the sacred places were. Then he built a school around the ancestral Néré trees that were already there. Bangre Veenem School Complex in Youlou, Burkina Faso serves children from nursery to high school. Compressed earth bricks. Thick stone walls. Double roof for ventilation. No air conditioning required, students say they’re comfortable enough to concentrate. The school also reduced its footprint by 40% to preserve the community’s farmland. This is what it looks like when architecture respects what was there before it arrived. In Zanzibar doors are more than just entrances. They are symbols of status and culture. There are mainly three types of doors in Zanzibar. The Omani door, commonly semi-circular on the top, grand and majestic. This door reflects the Arabic heritage, with Islamic elements and Quranic inscriptions. Swahili door usually rectangular, simple yet elegant, with linear patterns and floral carvings. It reflects practicality and modesty. A Gujarati door originating from Gujarat, India. Vibrant and intricate with floral carvings and brass studs, this door is a symbol of beauty. But one door in Zanzibar stands out even more. This special door has extra carvings of a snake, eagle and lion. The snake symbolizes wisdom and protection. The eagle represents power and freedom. And the lion is a symbol of courage and strength. It is called the door of strength and wisdom. Zanzibar doors aren't just doors, they're living history.

Swedish architects designed more than just a building in Tanzania 🇹🇿 they created a home that sustains itself and the children who live in it. Built for 25 children, the children centre uses traditional burnt bricks for its walls, staying rooted in local materials and methods. The corrugated steel roof sits on a wooden frame, with a clever gap that allows airflow and is kept safe with sisal poles to stop birds from nesting inside. But what makes it truly special is how it works as a system:
Solar panels power the home, rainwater is harvested and stored and biogas plant turns waste into cooking gas And it doesn’t stop there ,the surrounding land is used to grow food and raise livestock, making the centre largely self-sufficient.
