Hiked up to the top of Puakatiki Volcano on Easter Island yesterday. Do you see the face carved into the side of the mountain?

@ArchaicLens The Bulletin of the American Geographical Society Volume 1, 1859, pg. 133 “In 1838, Capt. Chas. Coffin, of the ship Ohio, Nantucket, and Capt. E. B. Sherman, of the Marcus, Fairhaven, visited the vaults together, and took from it several human bones of gigantic size.”

Video of my Nan Madol expedition and findings coming this week. The crux of the mystery here is also the central controversy: was this a lost kingdom of the ice age? Was Nan Madol built when the sea level was lower? Why would anyone build their city partially submerged in the ocean? What does the evidence suggest? My opinion on all these matters will be dropping later this week along with all my exclusive footage. For now please enjoy this teaser video with relaxing music.

After going to Brazil with @East10Outpost to document the geoglyphs I *was* planning on holding another contest to take another person to another ancient site of their choice… I thought it could be cool if that became my thing that I do but now I’m really not so sure… Definitely still going to Brazil with @East10Outpost though I feel extremely confident he’s a good guy Be careful who you meet on the internet kids.

***Nebraska is in the middle of a devastating wildfire emergency.*** It is the worst wildfire destruction our state has ever experienced. Nearly three quarters of a million acres have already been consumed, and the fires continue to spread with no containment in sight. The Morrill Fire, the largest ever recorded in Nebraska, along with the Cottonwood, Anderson Bridge, and Road 203 fires, are sweeping across the state with force. Highways are closing. Families are being forced to evacuate. A state of emergency has been declared. And heartbreakingly, a life has already been lost. The conditions are fueling the chaos. Strong winds. Dry land. Fire moving faster than it can be fought. This situation is not under control. In a moment like this, Nebraska needs more than manpower and resources. We need prayer.

@1Lambinator @CassieCMartin well they were made of red scoria and coral which are both fairly abundant, no need to crush up the eyes specifically. Plus it was the eyes that gave them power, brought the statues to life. I reckons they were collected, and hidden, stashed away in a cave some where

@ArchaicLens @CassieCMartin Absolutely. Crushed for soil amendment, perhaps? Gardening here presents a whole other lot of challenges, as I’m sure it’s aware.

It’s difficult to grasp the size of Te Tokanga (The Giant), the largest unfinished moai statue on Easter Island, but this chart helps. It’s over 21 meters (70 feet) in length and weighs over 200 tons. It was incredible to see it with my own eyes ✨

@1Lambinator @CassieCMartin one of the great mysteries here is the disappearance and current whereabouts of all the inlaid eyes each one had. Only one has ever been found

@ArchaicLens @CassieCMartin Per Easter Island, they seemed disenchanted with the moai tradition and evolved to the birdman cult and moai kava kava. A fascinating thing (to me) here are the ahus that have not been restored, as in this photo I took. The Rapa Nui pushed most of them over sometime around 1700.
