I had a similar experience in South Africa in the 90s, with a medical student friend friend. We were both doing our elective. We were out one evening when we realised we had both been drugged. We managed to make it safely back to our accommodation, but it was terrifying. The other med students thought it was a ketamine/caffeine mix that was apparently well known for being used to spike drinks at the time.

Two years ago today, Jaimi and I were spiked by a waiter in a hotel whilst we were sat chatting. We were both incredibly ill, and it’s a miracle we both realised, got back to our room, locked and barricaded the door, and then passed out. When we each came round, the pain and weird symptoms were absolutely terrifying, but we didn’t dare tell the hotel we needed help in case we were at risk.
I will never forget the moment I realised something was seriously wrong. I was stood in water, around waist-height, chatting to Jaimi. Suddenly, I realised I didn’t have control of my body anymore, and I felt like I would pass out in the water and drown. I had this urgent voice telling me to get out of the water.
We were both getting more and more confused, and got back to our room as fast as we could manage - which was pretty difficult as everywhere looked like a repetitive blur. I don’t remember much of how we got back, or how long it took us.
When James Cleverly made the comments about spiking his wife with a date-rape drug a couple weeks back, I didn’t have the words or the energy to respond. When I saw he was playing it off as a funny joke, I was just so utterly bored of the same old same old. “It’s just a rape joke. It’s just a spiking joke.” I just knew he was not the kind of guy I would want heading up sections and departments around VAWG.
I’m not even sure why I’m writing this - but it came up on my memories today. 2 years ago, I was with my wife, recovering in a room from whatever the hell had been put in our drinks. It haunted us both for weeks - why were we targeted? What was the next step in that plan? Was it for a laugh? Was it to abduct us? Rob us? Rape us? Kill us?
Apparently James Cleverly apologised a few days back, but apologies don’t change the fact that the dude we are supposed to trust with addressing VAWG is the one making jokes about date-rape, drugging his wife, and ‘keeping her sedated’.
Sickening. The wrong people are in power. As always.

Why are living standards lower in UK than in our major competitors? Why are chancellor and PM cutting taxes rather than investing in public services? Krishnan Guru-Murthy, "Are you surprised it took a drama on TV to regalvanize the debate?"
Alan Bates, "I'm pleased this has actually achieved something"
KGM, "If you sat down with Rishi Sunak and could write down your prescription, what would it be?"
AB, "To get money that is owed to the actual victims.. It's been going on for far too long, we've lost 70 of them already.. Then look at who is responsible and hold them to account.. Then sort out the convictions.. They've got to get on with them now"

Watch @AndyMcDonaldMP grilling the current Post Office CEO Nick Read last June
"What is so extraordinary about you that you feel you deserve a whacking bonus of £455,000 to make your total pay £870,000"
Andy: The metric used to calculate part of the Post Office executives' bonuses was based on false information in the accounts relating to the inquiry into the Horizon scandal.
Andy: The executives must return all inquiry-related bonuses immediately
Andy McDonald MP for Middlesbrough & Thornaby East@AndyMcDonaldMP
While some postmasters can barely make ends meet, the Post Office chief exec was paid of £870k - including a whacking great bonus of £455k. In parliament he tried to justify executives receiving bonuses as a way to "incentivise people to do the right thing". Ridiculous.🧵1/2
