During the British blockade of Berbera in 1855, much of Berbera's trade was diverted to Ceel Daraad. Ceel Daraad with its fort & 100-200 dwellings in a regular trade season grew tenfold to ~1,500-2,000 in 1855. Caravans arrived with gums, ivory, and ghee for export to Aden.
