@Mr_Rablin Our school has students take attendance daily online. I embedded a 30 minute timer on their attendance sheet with the suggestion that they start the timer, work for 30 minutes, and then submit their attendance rather than just take their attendance and not access any material

How are you teaching students to manage their time, tasks, and selves today? In case you misheard, I said teaching not expecting. Right now a lot of us are realizing we've spent tons of time expecting students to have these skills but never teaching them. It's showing.

@Smith14_CJUSD @alicekeeler You can change the notification settings on google classroom. The only notifications I get are when students turn in a late assignment.

@alicekeeler I have access, but when they complete work after it’s due, I don’t know that they did it. I’m not going to sift through every student to see if they did it after I already graded others. They need to get in the habit of turning in and marking as done.

It does not matter if a student clicks the submit button in #googleClassroom. You have access to the files regardless. This is a paradigm shift for using G Suite. #googleEDU

@Mr_Rablin I’ve gone the other way. Our students take attendance daily, so I break it up into smaller daily tasks to help co-regulate time management. For some, staring down at a week’s worth of work can feel overwhelming and others feel obligated to work on the weekend if it’s there.

Best decision I've made for remote learning: I drop content on Friday morning for the following week. Why? 1. It gives students a chance to check in with me before the weekend. 2. It gives me a weekend with less stress than a Monday drop.

I’m glad that we’re asking students how they are doing and being aware they have a social-emotional presence. But, are we actually paying attention to it? If so, are we willing to make changes to our pratices to meet those needs? (1 of 2)

Suggestion here: Instead of pushing out content, or classes and activities, can we spend the first week of school (or longer) teaching students HOW to be an online student? Let them get familiar with the platforms and technology first. Teachers too. #reimagineWaED #neuraled #

14 million students need mental health services 1 school psychologist per 1,381 students 1 counselor per 430 students I think now is a really good time to redefine what we expect from our schools, and what we want for our students. #teachers #neuraled #Mentalhealth #education

The National Association of School Psychologists recommend no more than 1,000 students per 1 school psychologist. A 2014-2015 study estimated the ratio at 1,381:1 (cont.) file:///media/fuse/drivefs-282535bbb1d7b9c76c42e7368e97de90/root/School_Psychology_Shortage_2017.pdf

The CDC recently recommended that schools should open fully in-person in the fall because the negative impacts on students' mental health far outweigh the potential negative impacts on physical health. (cont.) #fn27" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…

@Drawn2Intellect @Mr_Rablin “That’s a great question. How can I help you bring your voice, culture and experience into our classroom? How can you help me learn about your individual identity? How can we explore contemporary issues in open dialogue? Because I’m not always the authority in this class.”

@Mr_Rablin (2 of 2) How do you reconcile academic progression with a structure that is built on a tiered system of regimented levels. Maybe “in progress” is a better lens than “pass fail.”

@Mr_Rablin How often do we tell students “you only fail when you stop working? But then simultaneously say “but that deal expires at the end of the semester.” (1 of 2)

As I am putting together a workshop about assessment, I can't stop thinking about the fact that the majority of our schools have grading systems that emphasize the needs of teachers and the system, not the students. Who does your grading system serve?
