@ezberry Agreed. Presumably if DSP optimization is working it should just bid accordingly to its (low) value.

Being a bit out of things, if it’s real people going to an MFA site, what’s the problem? Optimize to whatever metric you care about, should include or exclude all these sites as appropriate, no?

If you work in tech are you expected to have a person that you talk about Elon's latest crazy antics with?

@eric_seufert The platforms will stop allowing paid ads via their apps and shift ad buying to a web-only feature.

Apple has update its App Store guidelines to require that social media post “boosts” be purchased as IAPs, entitling Apple to 30% of that advertising revenue. This is new as of iOS 16.1, which was released today

Am I understanding correctly that you can just make a thin wrapper around gpt-3, call yourself an AI startup, and raise $100M?

There's a totally different way to look at this. Each of the triopoly offers a full funnel for different verticals: Meta: Fashion, entertainment, apps Google: High-involvement products like finance and travel Amazon: Disposables and consumables
Ari Paparo@aripap

It dawns on me that the advertising triopoly perfectly matches consumer behavior: Meta: Top of the funnel, stuff I didn’t know I needed Google: Mid-funnel, research Amazon: Bottom funnel, transacting and choosing what to buy

@aripap This is a more interesting idea. I would argue Amazon and Google are fundamentally different than Meta in that you can actually research a product to buy extensively. Meta works for products that require less consideration. Not necessarily cheap, but like the checkout aisle.

@aripap This is almost entirely sponsored product listings on Amazon.com. I don’t think these shopper marketing budgets are fungible with Meta or Google.

@aripap You think the DTC brands on Meta are looking for upper funnel metrics like reach and awareness? The trick Meta does is they often do a version of retargeting where you see every brand in the interest you demonstrated off of Meta.

@AriLewine ?? Meta isn't. Most insta ads are for products you've never heard of, that's why it has been so powerful for D2C.

@ezberry I have a recurring dream that I have a class across campus and I can never find where the classroom is and I go online to drop the class but it’s too late.

@SpiritofPines Buying ads programmatically is hard and a single misconfiguered setting out of hundreds can wreck an entire ad campaign.

3rd party cookies will be replaced with 1st party data. Its private, secure & accurate. But it isn't scalable. Today TripleLift acquired 1plusX. Together we will offer 1st party data-derived audiences at scale. Welcome to the (1st) party.

@AriLewine More folks with this knowledge would guarantee adops teams remain severely under paid. Good for the organization in terms of getting cheaper labor bad for the folks who are self taught and trying to create value/security for themselves.

There should be a "coding bootcamp", but for ad tech. - Run campaigns in a DSP - Manage a publisher ad server - Troubleshoot discrepancies etc. I think the hiring rate would be incredibly high.

Is it being implied, even subtly and potentially incorrectly, that the W.B. in "Who but W.B. Mason" stands for "Who but"? It can't be, but it really feels like it.

New Next in Marketing pod episode - very frank and illuminating chat with @AriLewine about why TripleLift sold, why it seems that few brands are changing their targeting habits despite all the ID changes, and what brands don't get about CTV spoti.fi/3sJg1xG @AppsFlyer
