This is an important conversation—especially in a moment where some active-duty officers feel comfortable publicly attacking members of the media, university professors, and Congress online. @FTGNotebook fromthegreennotebook.com/2026/03/28/ep-…

I get to talk with a large group of senior Warrant Officers (CW4s & CW5s) this afternoon and tomorrow. What do you want me to tell them?

What is Tragic Optimism? A Thread Last week, I wrote about toxic positivity. To summarize, toxic positivity is a forced denial of any tragic past. It’s often encouraged in the military to “embrace the suck.”

Kicking off the month with #LeadershipandaNapkin, where we’ll focus on self-awareness. I appreciate everyone who follows along and engages! We all have two images: the one we see in ourselves, and the one others see. The healthiest leaders work to align the two. When there’s a mismatch, don’t rush to defend with “why?” Instead, pause and ask, “how?” “How did this gap form? How can I bridge it?” Curiosity leads to understanding—and real growth. Let’s seek to close that gap together. #StayCalibrated

I spent the last couple of days in Washington DC at an Army writing seminar put on by AUSA and the Army’s Harding Project, which focuses on energizing the Army’s professional journals. Even the Army Chief of Staff stopped by to speak. One of the things that sets our military apart from other countries is our professional journals. There are not many other places where a young sergeant can write a professional article and it lands on the desks of the highest ranking people in the Army. More importantly, those articles drive change across the force. They highlight issues that can be addressed prior to learning that lesson the hard way in combat. Writing matters.

Same, but challenge to Army folks to apply for that nominative, broadening, operational, KD, OC/T, instructor, command, SEL, CCWO, etc…position you really want but are doubting yourself or putting it off! Drop that school application, OCS, WOCS, or G2G packet. Take a CDR/CSM/1SG position.

The answer is yes. The answer will always be yes. I’ve had it happen as a commander. We got the person the help they needed. They are now thriving and their career is still going strong. You aren’t weak. Get help if you need it.

Shout out to my friend/mentor and my SGM. I have had a bitter taste about awards since I was an E4. Recently I was talking to my friend/mentor and he recommended asking about if I can get an award for something I did. I laughed it off, but it came up in discussion with my SGM and he was like “absolutely, let’s do it!” This isn’t about the award it’s self, but having leaders who are supportive and care about what may seem like a little thing to others.
