i'm a paper engineer, a huge part of my job is finding out ways to replace plastic components with cardboard alternatives.
the trend of keeping products in packaging and therefore making the packaging part of the product/display has created unfathomable amounts of plastic waste

packaging is a tough one, in general as a paper engineer i want to reduce the size of packages to reduce shipping costs & increase the number of boxes that fit on a pallet
BUT we still have to leave enough room to protect the product and give ~perceived value~ with customers...
