On paper, there are a near-equal number of seats where Lib Dem & Labour are 2nd & where there was a (again, on paper) 'progressive majority' last time. Note that gap in the middle and the clustering: the distance between 'progressive' parties has become clearer in these places...

A thread based on a new working paper written with @aron_cheung and @proftimbale: ‘Breaching the Blue Wall: could tactical voting help England’s progressive parties defeat the Conservatives?’ Here’s one clue as to why it's a Q that risen up the agenda. ukandeu.ac.uk/working-paper/…

UK decision to only accept NHS vaxx-pass + latest green list review is creating bizarre travel rules. Travel to 🇬🇧 from 🇩🇪 (cases x50 lower) means quarantine + ££PCR tests, but returning with EU vaxx-pass is friction-free. Also 🇮🇱 staying on the green list, 🇭🇷 joining, but not 🇩🇪

A year ago, with @ProfTimBale and @Aron_Cheung we identified (on the left map) a 'yellow halo' of growing electoral strength for the Liberal Democrats. Chesham and Amersham is one of those dark grey squares in the middle of it. ukandeu.ac.uk/wp-content/upl…

By-elections are often weird outliers... but the Chesham & Amersham result signals a deeper shift with the Lib Dems now threatening the Conservatives in places that, for years, were safe blue (red wall echoes anyone?) Analysis a year ago by me @DrAlanWager @ProfTimBale👇

And anyone assuming that political gravity is due to hit the SNP / Welsh Labour any day now should revisit their assumptions

Maybe incumbency fatigue just doesn't work the same way for state and devolved level elections compared with national elections? And given relatively recent devolution in the UK it's taken a while for that to become clear

People who are surprised about the SNP and Welsh Labour performing so well after three and five terms in office respectively should maybe look at how long the CSU has governed in Bavaria

This is too much for my fragile little brain and I want to finally say goodbye to UK bureaucracy

Can any UK freelancers recommend a good/not too pricey accountant for slightly more complex HMRC self-assessments (e.g. split year, leaving the UK mid tax-year)?
