Just a little explanation about why I so appreciate your support of the two albums I’ve produced with Shooter Jennings. Working with Missy Querry of Selecto-O-Hits, our distributor, I created my own label, Breakheart Music. Because of the blessings of my film career, I can obviously live comfortably without working so hard to promote these albums. I do it, however, because we are trying to construct a low-cost business model for independent artists to reap the benefits of their creativity and hard work. The major labels and streaming services basically take all the profits, so young artists who are signed are forced to tour to make any profit from their work. By retaining their songwriting rights, owning their own label, eschewing the machinery of distribution (advertising, PR, all of it), they can have a shot at making a profit by virtue of their work and its appeal to their social media followers. TOMBSTONE OPERA is being “sold” this way, and slowly but surely it’s working.
