For Day 11 of @UN_Women's #16Days of Activism, we’re doubling down on the fight to ‘UNiTE to end digital violence against women and girls’. Researching digital violence targeting women and girls – and understanding the intersectional hate they face – often starts with lexicons. At CIR, we build and use lexicons to help us to: 👉Detect harmful content at scale, even in massive data sets 👉Spot patterns and trends in gendered, ethnic, and religious hate 👉Compare narratives across languages and communities 👉Build evidence for advocacy, safety interventions, and policy change Today we’re publishing an expanded lexicon of inflammatory terms in Amharic, Afaan Oromo, Tigrigna, and English - now 47% larger than before. Sharing this openly means researchers, civil society, journalists, and technologists can all investigate digital violence more rigorously and transparently. Together, we push forward a revolution built on equality, resilience, and truth. The time is now. Victory to women’s rights. 💪 Context: Liberation is not something a man gives you. You must fight for your own rights. And of course, men are our allies.

These are the revolutionary women of Ethiopia, rising with unshakable courage. Their voices echo through generations, demanding justice and dignity for all. They stand as symbols of resistance, carrying the fire of change in their hands.

Digital spaces should be places of connection and empowerment, not fear and harassment. Together, we must challenge the online cultures that normalize abuse and silence women’s voices.

በ2018 ዓ.ም ሩብ አመት ከ400 በላይ ጾታዊ ጥቃት የደረሰባቸው ሴቶችና ሕጻናት በተለያዩ መንገዶች ድጋፍ እንደተደረገላቸው የቢሮው የሴቶች ዘርፍ ኃላፊ የሆኑት ዝናሽ ከተማ መናገራቸውን ሪፖርተር ዘግቧል።

ይህ በእንዲህ እንዳለ በአዲስ አበባ ከተማ ጾታን መሰረት ያደረጉ ጥቃቶች እየጨመሩ መሆኑን የአዲስ አበባ ከተማ ሴቶች፣ ሕጻናትና ማሕበራዊ ጉዳይ ቢሮ አስታውቋል።

ብዙ ግዜ ስለሴቶች መብት ሲወራ የከተማ ሴቶችን የመብት ጥያቄ ለማፈን ጥረት ይደረጋል። ሆኖም ከተማ ውስጥ የሚኖሩ ሴት በርካታ ጾታን መሰረት ያደረጉ ጥቃቶች ይደርስባቸዋል።

ከዚህ ቀደም ሂጃብ የሚለብሱ ሴቶች ከትምህርት ቤት መታገዳቸው እና ኒቃብን በተመለከተ ያለው ክርክር አለመቋጨቱም በተቋም ደረጃ የሴቶችን አካል ለመቆጣጠር ያለውን ፍላጎት አመላካች ነው።

ነገሩ ከስነምግባር ጉድለት አኳያ መታየቱ ማህበረሰቡ ሴቶችን የሚያይበትን የተዛባ መነጽር የሚያጠናክር ነው ብለን እናምናለን።

ሴት ተማሪዎች የጥፍር፣ የጸጉርና የከንፈር ቀለም መቀባት፣ ቅንድብ መቀንደብና መኳኳል፣ ጌጣጌጦችን አድርጎ ወደ ትምህርት ቤት መሄድን የሚከለክል መመሪያን ትምህር ትሚኒስቴር አዘጋጅቷ።

However, many victims of sexual violence never report the crime or seek treatment, fearful of stigma or of learning they may have contracted an STI or become pregnant.

Children under 18 accounted for 45% of cases. Just over half of the victims tested positive for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), while many were also left pregnant and with severe psychological trauma.

The BBC collected data from 43 health facilities in Amhara - roughly 4% of all health facilities in the region - and other medical sources to get a snapshot of what has been happening. At these facilities, there were 2,697 reports of rape between 18 July 2023 and May 2025.
