This is the second time that I've accidentally used the wrong number of colors on a sprite, the first time was on a moth enemy, which has already been fixed:
(This uses 9/256 tiles, the shadow is reused from another sprite.)
This is the first new monster sprite I've made all year, for my Dragon Quest 1 clone... I figured I'd finally post some art, on here.
This sprite uses 12/256 tiles, from my total budget.
(Yes, I'm aware that I messed up, and only used 2 of the 3 colors)

@matthughson I had a similar incident, with my cat sneaking into my office, and stepping across the keyboard.
The resulting mess was about 50-ish extra letters, and one line of code (which was highlighted) being clobbered. It was an "LDA or STA $XXXX", I think?
Had a mild panic attack tonight😅 While testing my game, the level suddenly started filling with random garbage blocks! Seemed like z nasty new bug.
But... I opened the level editor to find that my kids had been in there messing around with the level while I was AFK! 😂 #nesdev
@matthughson Back when I developed Cotton & Candy, I had designed every level on grid paper, and hand-typed the bytes into an ASM file. (which was very time consuming)
For Dragon Master, I wrote an external tool for map editing, that exports the compressed tile data... 😅

Are you going to keep the small window of Dragon Quest 1, or switch to a black screen, like the later games did?
AFAIK, all technical uncertainties I had related to making this game on NES have been cleared (scrolling, drawing UI across nametables, music+sfx, mapper+banking, battery saves). Rest is game logic and content and the only challenge left is making it all fit inside 256KB. 🥳
