On this day in 1933, the German Reichstag passed the Enabling Act, granting Hitler dictatorial powers and marking the formal end of parliamentary democracy. This was a total spatial liquidation of the working class. The KPD and SPD were outlawed, turning every union hall and public square into a site of state-mandated exclusion. The state used geography as a weapon, defining who had the right to exist in public space and who was to be erased from the landscape. The resistance did not vanish; it went subterranean. Despite the arrest of Ernst Thälmann and the mass internment of cadres, the KPD pivoted to a strategy of illicit spatial occupation. Secret printing presses in basements produced millions of leaflets, turning city walls into a contested frontline. This was a guerrilla cartography where the working class reclaimed the street through the cover of night. Networks like the Red Orchestra proved that while the state could seize the parliament, it could not colonise the hidden spaces of proletarian solidarity. Today, as the far right resurfaces across Europe and the UK, the lessons of 1933 are a visceral warning. The same maps of exclusion are being redrawn. Left solidarity is the only architecture capable of resisting the new clearing. The struggle of every marginalised group is a crucial part of class politics, a unified fight against the same enclosure that threatens us all. The Communist Party utterly condemns the suspected arson attack on the Jewish Volunteer ambulances in London last night. This is a direct assault on the essential infrastructure of our communities. To target the vehicles that provide emergency medical care is to target the most vulnerable members of the working class. This is not an isolated incident of mindless criminality but gives all indications of being an antisemitic hate crime. We stand with the Jewish community and will always oppose those trying to spread hate and division. The growth of hateful ideologies is no accident but the logical conclusion of a system that fosters suspicion and violence to maintain its own stability. We reiterate our unequivocal opposition to the rise of antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of hate crime. These ideologies are the tools of the ruling class, deployed to fracture the unity of the people and divert anger away from the architects of economic exploitation. The propagation of such hatred is a fundamental threat to the collective safety of our streets. The state has proven itself unable and unwilling to provide genuine security against reactionary violence. History demonstrates that the only effective defence against such terror is the organised solidarity of the working class. We reject the rhetoric that emboldens the arsonist and call for a unified front against those who seek to divide us by race, religion, or origin. Solidarity with those affected.
