📖 Librarian’s Log — On Being the Villain Today I cataloged another book… Its pages kept opening to the same chapter… the part where the Hero finally understood who had ruined everything…. I was there, of course. As the Villain….. It is a strange thing to realize that somewhere, in someone’s memory, you are the dark turn their life took. The betrayal…. The abandonment…. The mistake with a face…. We speak so often of our own pain that we forget others may carry scars shaped like us. A sentence we said too sharply. A silence we thought harmless. A choice that saved us and wounded them immeasurably… Most villains do not wake in the morning twirling their mustache and plotting ruin…. Some are simply tired or frightened. Some are trying to survive. Some do not even know the damage they are causing until the ashes have cooled…. That does not absolve them…. Intent is not magic. Ignorance is not innocence. Still… I have grown suspicious of stories that divide the world too cleanly. Heroes on one shelf. Monsters on another. Most lives are not shelved so neatly. Sometimes the dragon is also grieving. Sometimes the knight was cruel first. Sometimes both remember the fire differently. There may be people who speak my name with bitterness. People who would tell their children I was the storm. And perhaps, in the architecture of their suffering, they would not be entirely wrong. This is the part pride hates. To accept that you may have been necessary to your own survival… and catastrophic to someone else’s peace…… -N.N
