With a midnight selfie video, Prime Minister Narendra Modi finally addressed the nation, promising students swift action, fast-track courts and tougher anti-paper leak laws. The video has since garnered more than 23 million views.
But a tweet and a selfie video that arrived 40 days too late appear to have done little to calm the Gen Z that has been beaten, battered and bruised, but not broken. Modi’s political oratory, social media mastery and carefully cultivated statesmen aura seem to be falling short with a generation demanding accountability, not optics.
If anything, the comments and memes have only grown more ruthless. For more than a decade, the Prime Minister of the world’s largest democracy has rarely taken a difficult question from the press.
Today, he finds himself being held to account by young Indians who refuse to be ignored. Their anger and frustration have risen above the political fortresses the BJP spent years building.

It took weeks for Prime Minister Modi to break his silence on the NEET paper leak and the exam irregularities that shattered the faith of millions of students.“Nothing is more important than the welfare and future of our youth,” he finally tweeted today promising to set up fast track courts to punish the culprits.
Since then, celebrity handles have begun expressing concern for students. They are talking about the future of India’s youth, their dreams, their hope, and how they are the nation’s future. But notice what is missing in their performative sympathies. Not a word about the police brutality unleashed on protesting students. Not a word about the accountability they are demanding.
At least, they are speaking up. Because anyone and everyone who wants a stake in India’s future, be it political parties, celebrities or influencers, now understands that they can no longer stand on the kerb as passive onlookers.
Because for the first time in a long time, it is the students who have seized democracy back into their own hands and forced the country to speak up, collectively.
